Janaazah

In planning a funeral for a Muslim there are a few key elements one must keep in mind. The Janaazah unlike other funerals, is for the deceased. The washing, shrouding, prayers , supplication and expedious burial are done in honoring the rights of the deceased.

In Al Islaam a Muslim is one who lives and dies in accordance with the Laws of Al Islaam and the Sunnah (what he practiced, what he said and what he allowed ) of Muhammad ibn Abdullah (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him).

In Al Islaam there are a few things that are considered Fard Kifayah (communal obligations).

Communal Obligations (Fard Kifayah)

Hadith (report or sayings of Muhammad ibn Abdullah (peace and blessings be upon him) states,

" A Muslim has six rights upon other Muslims:

     - Returning his/her salaams

     - Answering his/her invitation (ie., food, social community gathering)

     - Making Tashmut when he or she sneezes

     - Visiting he/she when they are sick

    - Following his/her Janaazah and many say giving good advice (naseehah) is a right upon one Muslim to another"  Reported by Buhkari, Muslim and others.

Thus when a Muslim hears of the death of another Muslim the responsibility of burial falls upon the entire community,(communal obligation) however when those capable (responsible) come forth, the burden upon the community is lifted, if no one comes forth to fulfill the duty upon the deceased the sin is upon the entire community.

When our funeral home is contacted often times families or members of the decedents family are not Muslim and or not familiar with the burial rites of a Muslim. However our funeral home is Muslim owned and operated an versed in Muslim burial rites.

The washing and shrouding and janaazh prayer is the responsibility of the deceased family. However if the deceased does not have a Muslim family or capable people to perform such duties then the family or the funeral home will appoint responsible people to carry out such duties.

He who washes a Muslim and conceals what he sees (bad smell /appearance) Allah grants him forgiveness forty times or forty major sins.

It has been reported that the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) peace be upon him, said: Whoever washes a deceased Muslim and covers him , Allah will cover his sins. And whoever shrouds him, Allah will give him a garment of silk in Jannah (Paradise).

It has also been reported by Abu Huraira  A.S. that Allah’s Apostle SAW said, “Whoever attends the funeral procession till he offers Janaazah Prayer for it, will get a reward equal to one Qirat, and whoever accompanies it till burial, will get a reward equal to two Qirats.”  It was asked , “What are two Qirats? “He replied “Like two huge mountains.” Bukari & Muslim

If a decedent is not a Muslim, Firdous Funeral Chapel will perform all funeral and burial rites with the utmost respect. We accommodate all traditions and religious customs.
