Malik S. Jones, a.k.a. Lil Seymour, and Poppo was born on January 22, 1969, to Sylvia Tweety Scott and Albert McKnight in Newark, New Jersey. A spry and precocious young man, Malik excelled in the Newark school system while attending West Kinney Elementary and graduating from Science High School in 1987. Malik extended his learning by attending Rutgers and Montclair State Universities.
Malik became a basketball enthusiast at a young age. He combined passion and commitment to the game that resulted in Malik becoming captain of the inaugural basketball team at Science High. A selfless gentle giant, Malik used his special talents and unwavering love of “the game” by training thousands of kids for well over 30 years. Most recently, Malik served as a coach and mentor for the girls’ basketball team at North Star Academy. Malik’s easy-going temperament and calm disposition enhanced his character; his larger-than-life persona and respect within the basketball community overshadowed his height. A man of small stature, Malik’s aura was definitely undeniable. While Malik possessed a strong affinity towards basketball, he was also a lover of poetry and the teachings of Minister Farrakhan. A self-published author, Malik’s “Kick the Can” cartoon and miniseries was one of his greatest accomplishments. Prolific, erudite, wise beyond measure, and certainly irreplaceable, the life and legacy of Malik S. Jones will resonate in the hearts of many.
Malik’s parents, Sylvia Tweety Scott and Albert McKnight, his favorite uncle Oscar, and one of his best friends, Vaughn Green – all preceded him in death.
Malik leaves a village of close family to cherish a lifetime of loving memories. His only child, Imani A. Jones (Eric), a granddaughter Asiyah, a grandson Asi, two sisters, Crystal Scott and Saleemah White, one nephew Jabbar, one niece Sienna, a special aunt Christine Davis, and special cousins Kheshea Jones and Patricia King. Malik had numerous family and friends from all lifestyles particularly his Zoo Crew and Hill Manor (611) folks, and dearest friends Jerry, Murad (Jenk), Mancy, Melvin, Demetra (Meeka), and Shawn (OG).
