William Carter Closs, lovingly known as “Junie” and “Naeem,” departed this life on April 7, 2026, at the age of 68 in Newark, New Jersey. He was born on May 19, 1957, in Vance County, North Carolina.
William was raised in Newark, New Jersey, where he built a life rooted in resilience, hustle, and community. He attended Cleveland Street School and later West Kinney High School in Newark. Throughout his life, Naeem wore many hats and took pride in his work. He was a skilled mechanic, owned and operated his own landscaping business, and helped manage multiple stores. His strong work ethic and ability to adapt made him a respected and dependable figure to many.
Known for his slick talk, charm, and unmistakable personality—often described as a true “P.I.M.P.” (polished, intelligent, motivated, and proud)—Naeem left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He had a deep love for basketball and was well-known for spending time on the courts, where his presence was always felt. Whether working, joking, or simply being himself, he brought energy and authenticity wherever he went.
Above all, Naeem cherished his family. He leaves to mourn and celebrate his life his children: Lakisha Steele (James) of Kingston, PA; Aletha Steele (Desmond) of Newark, NJ; Naeem Closs of Newark, NJ; Carlos Santiago (Irma) of Orlando, FL; and a host of grandchildren including Patricia Harris, Ja’Qure Pittman, Jah’Ssan Steele, India Brooks, James Murphy, Jamir Murphy, Sukyi Woods, Samaiyah Williams, Taneeya Closs, Nasiyah Closs, and Jayceon Closs.
He is also survived by his siblings: Vivian Closs, Geraldine Smith, Gary Closs Sr. (Michelle), Mary Mitchell, Deborah Closs, Lillie Closs, Nathan Closs (Shelly), Woodrow Closs, Gerwayne Closs, Anthony Closs Sr. (Dayshawn), and Johnnie Closs, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He shared a special bond with his nieces Ebony Steele and Tanaja Vincent.
William was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Roxanna Closs and William Closs, and his son, Laquan Woods.
