Marie Baker

Marie Baker known as “NaNa or Mrs. Baker” by family and friends, was born to the late Clark Henry and Lola Jackson in Montgomery, Alabama on May 5, 1921. She was raised in Union Springs, Alabama and was one of 9 children.

Marie is preceded in death by her husband Perry W. Baker, her six brothers Clark, Frank, Leo, Robert, Wiley, and Charlie Henry, a sister Lessie (Emmet) Underwood, and her children Perry, George, and Benjamin Baker, Lola (James)Cannon, Vernon (Takia) Washington, Kevin (Janice)Washington, and Phyllis Washington.

Marie was educated in Union Springs, Alabama. She began her life with Perry Wilson Baker who she married in Bullock County, Alabama on Sept 4, 1942. She migrated to Newark, NJ in the mid 1940’s. After the death of her husband her priorities were taking care of her family. Mrs. Baker had a hand in raising all of her grand, great grand and great great grand children. Marie was a stranger to no one she was a loving care giver and supportive to everyone No Matter what! She was a home maker and her most talented abilities were doing hair, and crocheting for all the new babies that entered the family. Everyone was welcomed in her home and you can always find her home filled with love and some cabbage and black eye peas. With years of taking care of others it was time for someone to take care of her.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one sister Lacy Swann, five children Leo(Ruby)Baker, Zakiyyah (Malik)Muhammad, Jewel (Jimmy) Coates, Lois Washington, Kenneth (Shirley)Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
