Mabel Short Hayes

Reflection of Life

Mabel Short Hayes of East Orange, New Jersey, departed this life on February 23, 2021.  Mabel was born on  December 25, 1942, to the late William and Estelle Short in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Mabel was educated in the Mecklenburg County School System and moved to East Orange, New Jersey at an early age.  Later in life she met and married Marcus Hayes.  She was preceded in death by her husband Marcus Hayes, her son Mark Furqan Short, and two sisters: Ruby Short and Stella Short-Wilson.

She was a dedicated member of Phillips Metropolitan Church, Newark, New Jersey. She was employed by the Newark Board of Education as a Food Service Worker until she retired. Mabel volunteered herself to various civic groups and organizations in Essex County.

Mabel was deeply loved by her family and friends.   She was the bond that kept the family tied together. She was full of life and always ready to go. Mabel was charismatic and enjoyed being around people.

Mabel is survived by  two sisters:  Thelma Short of East Orange, New Jersey, and Jeanette Short Richardson of Rich-mond, Virginia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
