Abdullah Ali Salaam (Leonard Snead) was born February 18, 1935 to the late Clara and Joseph Snead in Newark, New Jersey. He peacefully returned to Allah on Friday, August 1, 2014.
Abdullah was educated in the Newark public school system and graduated from East Side High School. He enjoyed amateur boxing where he had many wins and few loses.
Abdullah accepted the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammed in 1958 and transitioned into the Leadership of Iman Warith Deen Mohammed in 1975. He was a stallworth member of Masjid Al Haqq. Sheik Salaam served in various roles in the community. He was recognized for his 30 years of service on the board of the Unified Eid Committee.
He was an employee at Safeway Trunking for nearly 45 years, where he was a shop steward for Teamsters Local 478 before his retirement in 1999.
Abdullah was united in marriage to Sharonda Alikhan in 1960. From this union, five children were born, Zakiyyah, Ali, Harun "Patricia", Khadijah and Jamal Salaam. Abdullah married again in 1980 to Maxine Salaam where he helped raised two sons, Dr. Karriem Salaam, Anthony and Michael Dunn.
Abdullah Salaam leaves behind a brother, Louis Snead and fourteen grandchildren: Asya "Jeremy" Washum, Jason Salaam, Hafeeza "Trevor" Nicholas, Jamal Salaam, Khiry Salaam, Jaquan Salaam, Blyss Snead, Mikal Hamilton, Laila Salaam, Jabriel Salaam, Chad Salaam, Abdul Hamilton, Jihad Salaam and Jannelle Salaam
Abdullah also leaves behind seven great grandchildren: Ayanna Washum, Elijah Nicholas, Ameerah Washum, Alise Washum, Najmi Salaam, Marcus Nicholas and Adam Washum and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents listed above, Abdullah was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Ollie Snead, sisters, Edith Crosby and Lula Slappy and grandchild, Iman Zarina Salaam.
