James Hawkins

August 20, 1938 — May 5, 2024

James “Shahid” Hawkins, age 85, was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend. He passed away peacefully at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, NJ.

James was born to Francis Hawkins Frye and James Tanner on August 20, 1938, in Spartanburg, SC.  He moved to Providence, RI when he was 11, where he graduated from Central High School.  After high school, James served in the United Stated Army and was stationed in Germany.  Upon his return from the army, James moved to New Jersey.  James worked for New Jersey Transit and retired in 2006.

James united in marriage to Beverly (Enoch) in 1978, and they moved to Scotch Plains, NJ.  This union was blessed with one child, Jaime.  Beverly preceded him in death in 2007.

James, also known as Shahid, was a devout Muslim and attended masjid in Plainfield, NJ until his illness prevented his attendance.

Anyone who knew James, knew he loved his family and friends.  Coming from a large extended family, fellowshipping with loved ones was a favorite pastime. James’ grandchildren, Christopher, Caden, and Brielle, were the light of his life.  He never passed up an opportunity to tell anyone who would listen all about them.

His memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: his daughter Jaime Reed (Jajuan); his grandchildren, Christopher Reed, Caden Reed, Brielle Reed; and many close family members and friends.

The family of James “Shahid” Hawkins wishes to thank the extended family members and friends who helped him and visited him throughout his illness.  We appreciated each act of kindness that was shown.
