Dorothy Ernestine Abdussalaam was born January 20, 1926 in Savannah Georgia to the late Bessie and Clark Mitchell. Dorothy departed his life on Juma'ah (Friday) August 9, 2019 at her residence with her children by her side.
Dorothy graduated high school in Savannah where she met and married the late Joseph Bruen in 1944. From the union came three children Constance, Harold and JoAnn.
Dorothy was baptized as a child and gave her life to God. Later relocated to New Jersey with her children in 1955 where she joined Allen AME Church. She later joined the Nation of Islam. Dorothy became a member of Mosque 25 in Newark, Masjid Muhammad of Orange and later joined Masjidd al Hadi in Elizabeth. Dorothy was devout Muslim for 59 years. Thirty years after accepting Al Islam Dorothy met and married her ex-husband Brother Edward Abdussalaam.
Dorothy was known a devout Muslim and she was loved by many. She was a caregiver to many and her grandchildren.
Dorothy leaves her beloved children Constance Wheeler and JoAnn Burweil to cherish her memory.
She also leaves her grandchildren Raymond and David (Sherry) Branch. Harlok Bruen Jr, Amos (Avis) Bruen. Kapetra Brown (late Horace Brown), Kenyatte Wjee;er, Shamekia Bruen-Jenkins (Howard), Hassana Tellis Robinson (Samuel). Twenty five great grandchildren, sixteen great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives and friends.
Dorothy accepted Delores, Bernice, Rena, Jeanette, Essie and Laura as her daughters as well as sisters.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents Clark and Bessie Mitchell, siblings Enoch Mitchell, Harold Mitchell, Bessie Walker and Mary Newsome. Grand daughter Lakeisha Regain Wheeler, Grandson Harold Leroy Bruen Jr., Arthur Branch, Nathaniel Branch and Son-In-Law John Edward Wheeler.
