Albert (Abdul-Shahid) Montgomery, born April 16, 1961 was a man of many words. As his wife, (Shirin Quddus), I affectionately called him Professor.
He was educated in the Newark Public Schools but later became a Student of Life. Some of you may know him as a kid from Little Bricks, a talented young boxer, as one of the best State employees of his trade, the man with the golden voice when he sang, or a great friend with some of the best advice. In whichever way, you must know, to know him is to love him.
His greatest joy was being the Oldest son of Edna Montgomery and Albert Montgomery Senior. As for his greatest accomplishments, the birth of his beautiful daughters: Tamirah Patterson and Shaheedah Banks Turner and his baby boy Khalil Montgomery. He gladly inherited their husbands respectively, sons-in-law Essa Patterson and Edwin Turner. From those great offspring came his heartbeats, better known as his grandchildren: Na’fee Banks, Madia Harper, Sanai Patterson and Skylar Turner.
He leaves behind a few stepchildren, with Sanaa Quander, as the youngest of the group, along with his younger brothers: Shariff and Kevin Montgomery, many extended family loved ones and countless friends.
Though Abdul-Shadid (Al) took his last breath on our earth on April 23, 2019, I know his legacy will live on, because of the souls he touched. One staple that will carry on, he would always say, “The ground is no place for a Champion, to stay down is not an option”, ‘Get Up Champ’, his motivation for himself and all!!
